Program highlight: The Little Brother/Little Sister Program

The Little Brother/Little Sister Program is based on the concept that young people can benefit from having the influence of a consistent, positive, role model in their life. The program helps youth between the ages of 4 to 14 by matching suitable adults, who become Mentors, with boys and girls in the counties of Kittson, Roseau and Lake of the Woods. This relationship will help in meeting the young person’s need for acceptance, understanding and offer positive guidance. The Mentor and their Little Brother/Little Sister get together at least once a month and participate in fun activities which enable the child to have a relationship with a role model who helps them build their self-esteem, expand their horizons and enrich their future. Free group activities are offered to program participants!

The bonds formed in the Little Brother Little Sister Program frequently evolve into lifelong friendships that extend beyond high school graduation. Approximately half of our matches have been partnered with a “Big” Mentor for four years or longer. The significance of this additional mentor support in a “Littles” life is highlighted by the top three survey responses. According to the survey, the involvement of “Littles” in the program has provided them with a positive adult role model, helped them recognize their life’s purpose, and shown them that the adults in their lives genuinely want them to succeed.

One of the Little Brother/Little Sister Program’s favorite group activities takes place at Blazin’ Saddles, where the horse interactions have been a powerful tool for providing opportunities for learning, growth, and connection. Children not only learn about responsibility and the importance of teamwork but also build confidence as they face new challenges alongside their peers. The experience of working with horses teaches them patience and empathy, as they must understand and communicate with their equine partners effectively. The joy and excitement in their eyes as they accomplish tasks and overcome obstacles is truly heartwarming.

Fostering bonds not only between the “Big” Mentors and their “Littles” but also among all participants, creating a community of support and encouragement. Each event leaves a lasting impression, reinforcing the value of kindness, perseverance, and friendship in the children's lives.
