Southwestern Minnesota Opportunity Council

Program highlight: SMOC Family Resource Center

In September of 2024, SMOC learned we were selected to receive a Family Resource Center grant from the DCYF. Contracting took some time, but on December 30th, we had a fully executed contract and could officially start work on the project. Staff were hired early in 2025 and on May 1, 2025, The SMOC FRC officially opened its doors!

The Family Resource Center's primary function is to create a hub where families, especially families from populations that are historically underserved, can be connected to multiple resources in a relationship based, coordinated, and uncomplicated manner to reduce adverse family experiences. Currently our Family Resource Center programming includes dental services, child and parent skill-building, and assistance with MNSure applications. Future expansions will include partnering with immigration or legal organizations, and referrals for mental and/or physical health support.

Families experiencing economic hardships can find a pathway to wellbeing through authentic connections at our Family Resource Center. This Family Resource Center supports families to be successful and reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect by building on their strengths and supporting them when they need it the most.
