Wright County Community Action

Program Highlight: Family & Community Resource Center, Teen Cooking Program

In 2024, Wright County Community Action collaborated with Wright County Health and Human Services and community members to establish a Family Resource Center in the county. The WCCA Family & Community Resource Center (FCRC) now offers a variety of resource navigation and support to anyone in our county, regardless of income. Community assessment data shows that while the area has a robust food security system, there is a need to expand focus to nutrition security. Another theme found in assessment data is the overwhelming call for support of teens. The FCRC developed a new program to meet both.

The Teen Cooking Program was launched in February 2026 and now 27 young chefs are enrolled. Ranging from preteen to high school, many are developing independence skills to break the cycle of generational poverty. This is a self-paced program that teaches safety, prep, and budget skills, promotes educational videos, and encourages participants to try new recipes. Participants earn points for completing tasks and can redeem them for kitchen equipment like cutting boards, crockpots, and more.

After learning about the program from a community partner, the FCRC was invited to collaborate with one school district’s Independent Living Skills class. Staff are now in the classroom on a weekly basis sharing a fun, nutritious recipe and educating the class on the need for food and nutrition security in our communities.
